Entry: Froude number
URI: https://registry.epos-eu.org/ncl/FAIR-Incubator/tcs-TSU/69
In fluid mechanics, it provides a measure of the relative importance of inertia forces and of gravity on fluid motion. It is defined as the ratio of the velocity of water particles to the phase velocity of the surface waves (square root of the product of the gravity acceleration and of the local sea depth). In the context of tsunami generation by landslides, the Froude number is defined as the ratio of the horizontal component of the velocity of the sliding mass along the sea bottom at a given depth, to the phase velocity of shallow water waves at that depth. Note that the tsunami Froude number should not be confused by the landslide Froude number, which is normalised by (gh)^1/2 where h is the landslide thickness.
