Entry: tsunami magnitude

URI: https://registry.epos-eu.org/ncl/FAIR-Incubator/tcs-TSU/46

A number representing the size of a tsunami in terms of physical quantities. The concept of magnitude in tsunami science is far less precise and established than in the seismological field. Different definitions have been proposed for "tsunami magnitude", involving the maximum wave height observed along a coastline or measured on tide-gauge records (Iida-Imamura scale), or only the maximum wave height observed along a coastline (Soloviev), or a linear combination of the logarithms of the maximum wave amplitude measured on tide-gauge records and of the distance between the instrument and the tsunami source (Abe), or the logarithm of the initial tsunami potential energy (Murty-Loomis).
