Entry: tsunami diffraction
URI: https://registry.epos-eu.org/ncl/FAIR-Incubator/tcs-TSU/42
Phenomenon occurring when a wave encounters an obstacle or an opening. The relevance of diffraction is a function of the ratio between the tsunami wavelength and the characteristic dimension of the obstacle or of the opening. For example, tsunami waves can be diffracted when they hit the mouth of a harbour. Tsunami fronts hitting the islands of an archiperlago can be diffracted if the distance between close islands is comparable with the tsunami wavelength.
